Thoughts on Public Speaking

I was recently talking with someone and the conversation turned to public speaking. The entity of this particular conversation isn’t so important, so much as it allows me to launch into my real purpose for blogging today.

Public speaking is a widely feared activity. There are many would rather do just about anything to get out of standing in front of a crowd of people, be they familiar or strangers, and speak. It is both a persistent and staggeringly paralyzing fear.

I’m sure there is some psychology-based reason for this fear, but quite frankly I am not hosting a lecture on psychology here and so I’ll spare you that conversation.

Moving right along, I don’t fall into the category of people that fear speaking in public. While I do become obscenely terrified in the presence of spiders, I don’t mind getting up in front of a crowd of people. Give me a room full of people as opposed to one itty-bitty spider any day.

Regardless of any of the above ponderings, my true point in writing this evening is that the conversation I originally mentioned has lead to my recalling an essay that I wrote, and later spoke about, my senior year of high school. The essay was written as a creative piece for my Advanced Placement English class, presenting it happened purely by chance.

We were scheduled to have a Senior Academic Awards night, and at the last minute, quite literally a couple of day’s prior, they decided that they wanted to have a student speaker at the event. Naturally they turned to the AP English class. When they pitched the opportunity no one immediately jumped at the chance, which now that I think about it is a bit strange, even stranger though was that I found myself raising my hand and volunteering to speak at the event in a room full of fellow seniors, their parents, and several staff members.

At any rate, this is the piece that I ended up sharing with those at the event:

The following is based on this prompt: What is your favorite word and why?

“Spoken Definition”

Words are exceptionally powerful. While we have all heard some variation of the saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, I can guarantee that no matter how many times you repeat it, the saying will never come any closer to the truth. In fact, the things that we say are often more powerful and, depending on the situation, have the capability to do more damage or good than our actions. This is why when speaking we must choose our words carefully; it is also one of the reasons why choice is my favorite word.

Choice is important to me because the ability to choose allows me to control certain aspects of my life, whether it is as simple as what shirt I wear in the morning or something larger, such as my future career. After all, it is the choices that we make that not only determine where we end up, but more importantly define who we are. I rely heavily on my ability to make my own choices in order to establish who I am and to allow myself the opportunity to become the person that I want to be.

The importance of choice also comes into play when I am speaking with other people or trying to express myself in some way. If my words are ill chosen, then the message I am trying to convey is more susceptible to being misconstrued or lost completely. Choice becomes increasingly important when people’s ability to understand where I am coming from and what I am talking about is left hanging in the balance.

Choice is my favorite word because it embodies the idea that I am in control of the direction of my life it is a powerful word that, to me, signifies that my choices define who I am, despite the opinions of others. In another respect, words are powerful and they should be chosen carefully. Word choice, and good choices in general, become increasingly important when I am attempting to convey a particular message. Ultimately, choice is my favorite word, because the choice’s that I make are the largest reflection of who I am, and who I one day wish to become.

What about you? How do you feel about public speaking? Is there a particular word that resonates with you?

BTW

If you have, by chance, made it this far, I’d like to let you know that this year’s blogging goal is to blog once a month. I fully intend to hold up to this goal better than I did last years. Please feel free to keep me accountable.

Enough With The Neurons Already

I still haven’t heard anything from MSU. Still. Yes it’s driving me crazy, no I don’t really want to talk about it, let alone think about it.

On the WCC front my unofficial transcript currently indicates that my associate degree is pending. I want to take this as a good sign. I’ll give them a couple more weeks to get back with me on that front, after all this week is only week six.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate waiting? I’m sure I have, but it bears repeating. I. Hate. Waiting.

Aside from the whole waiting game aspect, today was actually a really productive day. We finished covering our last chapter in algebra, and I think I have a pretty good handle on things there. Today was also the last lecture in Abnormal Psychology; I get to take that final on Wednesday. Yay! Last night I finished and sent off my Philosophy exam. That was an AWESOME feeling; I’m so relieved to be done with that class. Earlier I managed to finish a massive outline for my Shakespeare paper, which is all that remains to be done for that class.

I’ll probably write the majority of the paper on my breaks at work tomorrow. I am so psyched to nearly be done with this semester! It is most definitely time for a break.

Earlier I was sitting in my psych class, and we started watching this movie. I kid you not the entire first half of the movie described in depth the appearance and function of a neuron. Now, in general relearning information doesn’t tend to frazzle me. I am used to this part of the education process. I get it, we need to keep going over the same information, it’s important, I will play your little games.

However, I must draw the line at this continual studying of neurons. Really, the concept is not so very hard to grasp. I understood it in all of my high school Biology classes and in the Intro to Psychology class I tool in the fall of 2007, and the Child psychology class in the following winter, and even the Human Biology course I took this last fall. By the time we went over it this semester in Abnormal, I was fully tired of the subject.

Neurons as important as they are, are not so very complex that they warrant this much attention. Or at the very least, they are not so important that they warrant this much of my attention.

Decisions, Decisions

I am working on finishing the more difficult part of my Shakespeare final exam at the moment. Just like on the midterm, this worksheet is for the most part compiled with quotes from the book. My task is to go through and for each quote determine who is speaking, which play it is from and what is taking place when the part is being spoken.

In theory it shouldn’t be difficult, considering that you know, I’ve read the plays. Really it’s not hard work it’s just a pain in the ass.

Have I told you lately that I’m really sick of Shakespeare? Because I am, I really am.

Aside from this crazy worksheet I’m waiting for my Philosophy professor to post the final for that class. If I could have the weekend to work on that it would be fabulous. Or even Friday. I could definitely devote some time to philosophy on Friday.

As far as my on-campus classes go things are going a little more smoothly. I just have a few more pages of reading to do for psychology, and nothing pressing for algebra. I’m hoping that I can get everything out of the way by early next week so that I have plenty of time to devote to the math review packet.

I also have to decide when I want to take my algebra final. He’s putting copies in the testing center, so theoretically I could drive up next Saturday and take it, but then Shawn still has to go in the following Monday, so it might just be smarter to wait and take it in class.

Decisions, decisions. I can’t wait for this semester to be over. I’m in need of a break, big time.

Ah, Michigan

It’s finally stopped raining. The rain wouldn’t be quite so unwelcome, if it weren’t also so cold outside. It’s supposed to stay cold through Wednesday. In fact, on Wednesday there is some talk of a rain snow mix. Gross. I’m looking forward to Thursday when it’s supposed to get into the sixties and then the eighties on Friday. That is my kind of weather!

Ah, Michigan.

I’ve managed to get everything done for my philosophy class. At this point I’m just waiting for him to post the final exam. Seriously, I can’t wait for the day that I don’t even have to think about that class and the inane homework that comes with it. Good-bye and good riddance.

The last two days have been seriously productive though. Not only am I all caught up in philosophy, but I’m caught up in my Shakespeare class. I can finally start in on the final exam for that class as well as lend some focus to writing my final paper.

I have three more days of Abnormal Psych left and four more days of Algebra. I’m so looking forward to this summer, if only because it will mark the first time since the summer following senior year that all I’ll have to worry about is work.

Well I shouldn’t say that necessarily… once schools out that’ll free up my time more meaning that I’ll have more time to focus on the fact that I still haven’t heard anything from MSU. Seriously, what’s the deal? I’m curious, and really quite anxious to know the final verdict. I’d like to have some idea of what next fall holds.

I suppose I’ll have to wait and see, even if I am a bit tired of waiting…

Lazy Friday

It’s Friday! It’s Friday and I’ve managed to finally complete and send off my philosophy exam and now all that remains for me to do is finish my Psychology reading and then I am free. Blissfully free for an entire week from school stress at least.

I started reading “Envy” last night, well technically early this morning… It’s the third book in
“The Luxe” series, I’m one-hundred pages in and hooked. I anticipate finishing it today so maybe Monday I’ll talk about it… or write a review for my other blog, that would be a good idea come to think about it.

I feel like I should have more to say with this post, but I really don’t. Not much has gone on today, except for homework and thankfully the lack of having to go to work.

Almost Spring Break

Technically spring break doesn’t start until next week, but today was my last round of classes until March, so I think it’s safe to say that as far as I’m concerned spring break has started. Now all I need to do is finish up my philosophy exam and some psychology reading and I won’t have think about school for a week.

I don’t exactly get the whole week to myself, what with work and everything, but it’d be nice to see the stress levels diminish even a smidgen.

What I’m really looking forward to is getting in some reading. I haven’t been able to do much reading aside from school assignments and so the prospect is really exciting. My pile of unread books is RIDICULOUS. Then of course I want to re-read The Immortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare before the third one comes out in March. I’ve been waiting for that book to come out since March of last year. That series is absolutely fantastic.

It’s also exciting that I’m getting that much closer to potentially hearing back from MSU. By my figures I’m likely to hear back from them near the end of March or the beginning of April. Although, we all know how reliable school tend to be…

Focus Failure

All I want to do is sleep, but I failed to work on my psych. homework before going to work this afternoon and now I’m stuck trying to concentrate on completing it. Concentrate is the key word in that sentence, and at the moment it seems impossible… so I’m turning to blogging instead.

The first thing on my list to finish is my article summary on hypochondria. It’s a relatively simple assignment, but it takes some amount of focus. Focus. The second things on my list are the two take home test questions, again not anything difficult.

Now if only I could bring myself to concentrate on the task at hand…

To Plan, Or Not To Plan

So since today didn’t go as planned… I’m thinking tomorrow will be my best bet for getting caught up. The goal is to not have to think about school next week during spring break. That’s the goal at any rate.

I’m hoping to get my math test back tomorrow. I think it went really well… but then of course sometimes thinking that can backfire. I’ve got my fingers crossed!

Tomorrow I also have to work on writing my article summary for Abnormal, it’s on hypochondria and though I tried to read through the article tonight I can’t bring myself to focus on it. Hopefully I’ll have more luck doing so tomorrow afternoon.

I plan to be organized and efficient, but then again after today maybe I should learn that in general it’s not a good idea to make plans.

To Study... or not

I’m supposed to be studying for my Psych test. I told myself as I was grumbling about going to work this morning that I would come right home and study. I’ve been home for two hours and have yet to seek out my book. Truthfully I’m not too worried about it. It’s not physics or anything.

God, I wasted so much time studying for those physics tests… I’ll get over it, someday. :D

I might get some study time in yet tonight, but probably not. Of course, studying would be a more effective use of time than attempting to sleep. Lately the moment the lights are off and the house is quiet the ceiling becomes increasingly interesting. Sleep deprivation ftw!

I promise to try and be more interesting tomorrow. However, based on the current trend I would suggest not holding your breath on that count.
